October 29th: Margo Burns--The “Moldy Bread” Myth and Salem Witchcraft

Margo Burns returns to present "The Salem Witchcraft Trials and Ergot, the “Moldy Bread” Hypothesis or What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been: The “Moldy Bread” Myth and Salem Witchcraft"

The chances are very good that anyone interested in the Salem witchcraft trials has heard something along the lines of the afflicted girls having eaten something that made them have their fits. Asking an expert about this often gives them fits! But where did this notion come from? Why is it so pervasive and cemented in the public imagination as an explanation of this lurid chapter in American history?

This lecture is a case study in how people come to believe myths and misconceptions about historical events.

Margo Burns is a noted authority on the Salem witch trials, a popular speaker and was project director for compendium of trial related documents, The Records of the Salem Witch Hunt.
